PRESS

Peza do Rei Mencía (2012) - "(100% Mencía that was briefly aged in new French oak): Bright purple. Sexy, mineral-laced aromas of dark berries and cherry-cola. Lithe and precise on the palate, offering bitter cherry and boysenberry flavors that turn sweeter with air. Finishes tangy and long, with a note of peppery spice. "

Peza do Rei Mencía (2011) - "This opaque and dark ruby colored Mencía from Spain opens with a mild black raspberry bouquet with a hint of old oak. On the palate, this wine is light to medium bodied, well balanced and easy to drink. The flavor profile is a mild oak infused red raspberry with hints of black currant and blueberry. The finish is dry and its mild tannins and flavors linger nicely. This is a very nice Mencía. If you have not tried this grape, this wine is a nice one to introduce you to the grape. Pair it with a pulled pork sandwich made with a root beer barbecue sauce. Enjoy."

Peza do Rei Mencía (2011) - "Bright purple.  Spicy, mineral-accented aromas of cherry pit and cassis, with anise and cracked pepper nuances and a hint of cola.  Juicy, penetrating dark berry flavors show a refreshingly bitter edge and gain sweetness with air.  Closes with firm tannic grip and very good clarity, leaving spice and licorice notes behind."

Peza do Rei Mencía (2009) - "Saturated ruby. Intense, mineral-accented aromas of red and dark berries, licorice and black cardamom. Picks up spice and floral notes with air and shows bright raspberry and blackberry fruit. Zesty acidity adds lift to the finish, which leaves traces of minerals and cracked pepper behind. I really like this wine's vivacity."

Peza do Rei Mencía (2009) - "The 2009 Peza do Rei Mencia, 33% of which was aged in new oak for 3 months, the balance in stainless steel. Earth, minerals, beef blood, black cherry, and black raspberry aromas compose the nose of this supple, ripe, elegant effort meant for drinking over the next 4 years. It is an excellent value."

Peza do Rei Mencía (2009) - "This opaque dark purple wine opens with a smoky blackberry bouquet. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied and easy drinking with a slight bit of elevated acidity. The flavor profile is a mild oak infused black cherry with hints of black raspberry. The finish is dry and its mild tannins are slightly sticky. If you have not tried Mencia yet, give this one a whirl with veal parmigianna. Enjoy."

Peza do Rei Mencía (2008) - "The 2008 Peza do Rei Tinto Mencia was partially barrel aged. Dark ruby-colored, it reveals a perfume of mineral/earth, leather, and raspberry. Sweet, savory, and pleasure-bent on the palate, this is an offering that is an excellent value for drinking over the next 3-4 years."

ADEGA CACHíN / PEZA DO REI WINERY INFO

Overview: The César Enriquez family is among the core group of founding growers of what was to become D.O. Ribeira Sacra, reconstituting their vineyard site to noble varieties from the early 1990s. Peza do Rei is a medieval walled vineyard and woodlands estate taking its name from the Kings of León, for whom it served as an income source and private hunting retreat. Within the extant albeit crumbling medieval walls are eight acres of vertiginous, single-row slate terraces forming a perfect south-facing amphitheater on the Edo River tributary of the Sil. Varieties planted are Mencía for reds, Godello, Treixadura and Albariño for whites.

Varieties planted are Mencía for reds, Godello, Treixadura and Albariño for whites. The modern bodega, with a capacity for 50,000 bottles, is excavated into a hillside for complete temperature insulation, and boasts thoroughly updated winemaking equipment.
