TASTING NOTES

Unoaked. Deep purple color, aromas of ripe red fruit and minerals. Inherent complexity. Not in the slightest a light wine, perhaps just the opposite—the finish is long and captivating.

PRESS

Casal Novo Mencía (2011) - "Opaque ruby.  Pungent redcurrant and cherry on the nose, with a mineral quality adding complexity and focus.  Firm, vibrant cherry and violet pastille flavors show very good concentration, with juicy acidity adding cut.   Aeration brings up deeper blackberry and licorice notes, which linger on the persistent, youthfully tannic finish."

Casal Novo Mencía (2011) - "This dark ruby colored Mencia opens with very musty earth like bouquet with a hint of black cherry in the background. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied, rather smooth, silky and balanced. The flavor profile is a cedar plank and red cherry blend with hints of red raspberry, minerality, and strawberry licorice. The finish is dry and its flavors fade away quickly. This wine is easy to drink and would pair well with food. I would pick meat lasagna. Enjoy."

Casal Novo Mencía (2009) - "Bright violet color. Spicy, mineral-accented aromas and flavors of cherry and cassis, with a suave floral quality and a late note of cracked pepper. Taut and lively on entry, then deeper in the middle, offering juicy, nicely delineated dark fruit flavors. The lively finish features good cut and persistence. I like this wine's energy."

Casal Novo Mencía (2009) - "This ruby colored Mencía opens with a black raspberry and black plum like bouquet. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied, balanced, and juicy. The flavor profile is a smoky black currant with a hint of black raspberry, plum and tangerine. The finish is dry and a touch of acidity and mild tannins show up in the end. This wine would pair well with slow cooked barbecue beef brisket. Enjoy."

Casal Novo Mencía (2009) - "The 2009 Casal Novo Mencia exhibits aromas of underbrush, herbs, black cherry, and a hint of balsamic. Structured on the palate, a bit more depth and concentration would have led to an outstanding rating. Even so, it is a solid effort meant for drinking over the next 4-5 years."

Casal Novo Mencía (2007) - "The unoaked 2007 Casal Novo Mencia is purple-colored with an expressive perfume of cherry, black raspberry, and earth notes. This leads to a medium-bodied, smooth-textured wine with plenty of spicy red fruit flavors, excellent depth and concentration, and a finish with no hard edges. Drink this pleasure-bent wine over the next four years."

Casal Novo Mencía (2007) - "Bright violet. Strong floral and mineral-driven dark berry aromas are complemented by rooty licorice and sassafras. Firm, focused and juicy, offering bitter cherry and redcurrant flavors, with no obvious tannins but nervy mineral spine to add support. There's no excess fat here: those who crave fat, obvious wines will likely find this meager and miss its admirable clarity and focus. Finishes with firm mineral bite and lingering spiciness."

ADEGA O CASAL WINERY INFO

Overview: Founded in 2000 by five partners sharing the ideal of capturing the true varietal and optimum expression of the indigenous Godello and Mencía grapes. Starting with inherited family plots at high elevation near the village of Rubiá, vineyard area has gradually expanded to the current six hectares (15 acres). Yields are kept low to assure concentration and mineral character.

History: Valdeorras—“Mineral Valley”— has been prized since Roman times for its slate and precious metals, remains an internationally- prominent source of slate for the building industry. The Romans may have taken the gold, but they cultivated the Godello—among the first vitis vinifera grapes to evolve in Spain, and a strong contender with Albariño for top honors among Spanish noble white varieties. Valdeorras is the Galician counterpart to Bierzo in Castilla y León, the two D.O.s separated by the Montes de León and communicated via road tunnels and the gorge of the Sil River. As in Bierzo, Mencía and Godello are the principal quality varieties, but in Valdeorras the more Atlantic climate and lighter soils tip the scales in favor of Godello.

Arriving from Bierzo, the first and highest village in Valdeorras is Rubiá, home of Adega O Casal. Founded in 2000 by five partners (including a former President of the D.O. Valdeorras), a total of eight hectares are planted in small parcels primarily to Godello and Mencía. High elevation and off-south exposures delay maturation, and quality is sought via low yields and sustainable viticulture. Parcels are located on both sides of the Sil River, offering both slate and chalk/clay terroirs. This duality of terroir is expressed in a layered textural/mineral complexity that defines the house style. Casal Novo Godello and Mencía are unoaked in order to feature the wines’ inherent complexity.
