HISTORY

The historic Can Feixes estate is situated on gravelly slopes above the 400-meter level in an amphitheater at the tree line near the famous Montserrat pinnacle, which forms Penedès' northern boundary. The farthest Penedès vineyard from the Mediterranean, temperature variation here is more Continental in its extremes, the drier climate more conducive to grape health. The altitude and mountain terrain constitute the tiny viticultural home of the Parellada variety, locally known as Montonec ("grape of the mountain"). Recognized as the region's Grand Cru, Can Feixes sells the majority of its grapes and a large portion of the fermented wines as well. Only the best grapes, and subsequently the best wines, are kept for production under the family label. Total vineyard area of approximately 120 hectares (300 acres) is planted to Parellada (Montonec), Macabeo, Chardonnay, Tempranillo, and Cabernet, with small amounts of Pinot Noir.

Vineyard plantation at Can Feixes is documented back to the year 1400, registered by Sr. Jaume Feixes. The estate has continuously produced wine since 1690, the Huguet family acquiring the property following an interruption in descendency at the turn of the 20th century.

Today's modern bodega includes subterranean aging cellars with pupitres for manual riddling of the CAVA, bottle storage and oak cooperage for the aging of red wine. Viticulture and enology are handled respectively by brothers Joan and Josep María Huguet.

Only free-run must from rigorously selected grapes is used. Bottled production averages 6,000 cases per year depending on vintage, including a fragrant, firm and minerally dry white (Can Feixes Blanc Selecció) and superb CAVA.

Can Feixes Blanc Selecció (2012) - "Fresh and aromatic, featuring melon, honeysuckle, mandarin orange and ground ginger flavors, with a note of zesty minerality echoing on the finish. Drink now through 2016."

Can Feixes Blanc Selecció (2012) - "This light yellow colored white wine has tiny bubbles when initially poured. But it is not a sparkling wine. It opens with a mild wet stone and faint pear bouquet. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied, slightly acidic and viscous. The flavor profile is a mild mineral infused lime with hints of green apple, tangerine and ginger ale. The finish is dry and its flavors and minerality are nicely prolonged and refreshing. This wine would pair with swordfish skewers of the grill. Enjoy."

Can Feixes Blanc Selecció (2012) - "Bright yellow. Ripe melon and nectarine on the fruity nose and palate. Smooth and palate-coating finishing with good punch and cling. This wine's intense fruitiness will serve it well with salty or spicy foods. "

Can Feixes Barrel Fermented Chardonnay (2007) - "Bright gold. Poached pear and yellow plum on the deeply scented nose and in the mouth. Weighty but there's good energy here as well. Lush and creamy in texture, finishing supple, warm and long, with a jolt of smoky vanillin oak. Drink up. "

Can Feixes Negre Tradició (2007) - "This dark ruby colored Spanish red opens with a pleasant black raspberry bouquet with hints of plum and wet stone. On the palate, this wine is full bodied, slightly acidic and rather juicy. The flavor profile is a lively ripe black plum with notes of nicely integrated minerality and hints of blackberry and black licorice. The finish is dry and its modest mild tannins do not get in the way. This very nice wine would pair well with a tangy pulled pork sandwich or a traditional Cuban sandwich. Enjoy."

Huguet Cava Gran Reserva Brut Nature (2007) - "This pale straw colored Cava with medium bubbles opens with wet stone, lime and bread dough like bouquet. On the palate, this wine is light bodied, pleasant, balanced and easy to enjoy. The flavor profile is a mineral infused mild green apple with hints of white pepper and a touch of clementine. The finish is rather dry and refreshing. This Cava is pretty food friendly and would be a perfect opener with bacon wrapped scallops. Enjoy."

Can Feixes Blanc Selecció (2011) - "This straw colored white wine from Spain opens with a lime and pilsner beer like bouquet. On the palate, this wine is light bodied, slightly acidic and mouthwatering. The flavor profile is lime with notes of nicely integrated minerality. I also detected some Anjou pear and a dash of white pepper. The finish is dry and its acidity and flavors last for a while after the wine is gone. This pleasant wine is a good value and would pair well with steamed mussels in a garlic wine broth."

Huguet Cava Gran Reserva Brut Nature (2007) - "An estate grown blend of parellada, macabeo and pinot noir from vineyards rising above 1,200 feet in the Alt Penedès, this is a fragrant Cava and an elegant expression of these rocky Mediterranean hills. Sunniness runs through its scents of raw almonds and freshly churned butter, the mousse firm, the finish tight. A refreshing beach wine, or a wine to transport you to the beach."

Can Feixes Blanc Selecció (2011) - "The 2011 Can Feixes Blanc Selecció, a blend of 40% Parellada, 36% Macabeu, 18% Chardonnay and 6% Malvasía de Sitges raised in stainless-steel tanks, has a fresh bouquet with notes of grass clippings and lemon peel as well as a touch of jasmine. The palate is well-balanced and nervy, with lime, green apple and asparagus on the entry. It is very tight at the moment, but it certainly has the substance to merit aging in bottle, while the finish has a pleasant touch of bell pepper lingering on the aftertaste. Drink 2013-2017."

Can Feixes Negre Tradició (2007) - "The 2007 Can Feixes Negre Tradició (formerly “Negre Selecció”) is a blend of Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot aged for 12 months in oak with 20% new. The reticent nose is difficult to appraise, though with aeration it offers subtle iodine and even a little seaweed. The palate has a rather hard entry with unyielding, chalky tannins. Firm and masculine, the Cabernet Sauvignon lends it a sturdy backbone and a slightly austere finish. This is a well-made wine, albeit one that is rather aloof. Drink 2013-2017."

Can Feixes Chardonnay (2007) - "The 2007 Can Feixes Chardonnay is a selection of the best parcels, raised entirely in French oak for eight months with regular batonnage. It has a lifted butterscotch and almond-scented bouquet that carries the oak extremely well. The palate is full-bodied with a leesy entry and touches of spice that become more prominent towards the orange rind, hazelnut and nectarine-tinged finish. It offers impressive persistency and freshness, the new oak barely noticeable. Again, this has the substance to merit aging, although it is delicious to drink in its youth. Drink now-2017."

Can Feixes Blanc Selecció (2010) - "Wine geeks tend to describe minerality, a very desired quality in wine, as “drinking stones” or something ridiculous like that. Taste this wine, and you’ll understand. This is a blend of parellada, macabeo, chardonnay (!) and a smidgen of malvasia, grown in high-altitude, gravelly soils in a vineyard that has been owned by only two families since nine decades before Columbus sailed the ocean blue. Intriguing aromas of herbs, sea air and grass are crystallized into stony — well, there’s no better way to describe the flavors."

Light straw colored, it delivers an inviting bouquet of biscuit, mineral, apple, and floral notes. On the palate it displays a smooth texture, excellent fruit, and good depth. Can Feixes Negre Selecció Especial (2000) - "The 2000 Negre Selecció Especial was bottled in 2005 and retained in the cellar for additional development. It is a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon aged in French and American oak. It is dark ruby red in color with a nose beginning to display some secondary characteristics along with notes of cedar, tobacco, cassis, and cherry. Elegant on the palate with a smooth texture, a racy personality, and 1-2 years of aging potential, it can be approached now but should hold through 2015 if not longer."

It opens with a mild apple bouquet with notes of lemon, wet stone, and cinnamon detected. On the palate, this wine is full bodied, balanced, and slightly creamy. There was a touch effervescence noted as well. The flavor profile is a tasty mineral infused pear with hints of green apple. The finish is dry and its mineral notes linger for a little while. Can Feixes Blanc Selecció (2007) - "The wine is made from a combo of local cava grapes Parellada and Macabeo.....with a touch of Chardonnay, and of Malvasia de Sitges. It is grown on gravelly mountain soils, and smells like it: gorgeous minerally aromas, completely bypassing the Young Fruit Bomb syndrome. On the palate, it tastes like life--fermenting, transforming, filled with energy. Can Feixes Blanc Selecció (2003) - "Tasting uncannily like premier cru French Chablis, this white blend from Penedes in Spanish Catalonia is a delicious discovery. It displays clean, precise citrus (lemon and lime) aromas, followed by fresh fruit flavors enhanced by a stony, mineral-tinged undertone. The result is a wine of uncommon complexity and sophistication. The Can Feixes estate consists of more than 400 acres of gravelly mountainside terrain that has been planted to both indigenous grapes and imported varieties. This wine is a blend of parelleda and macebeo, two locals, and chardonnay. The whole, surely, is superior to the sum of its parts. Light-bodied but full of flavor, this is an ideal wine to pair with shellfish or delicate whitefish such as flounder or sole."
