OVERVIEW

Morgadío is the easternmost inland estate in D.O. Rías Baixas, located in the subdistrict of Condado do Tea. Albariño’s revelation as one of the wine world’s noble white varieties is due in large part to work done at this property from the mid ’80s to the mid ’90s.

HISTORY

Galicia's legendary Albariño grape until the late 1980s remained just that--a legend. Often thought to be distant relative, perhaps even an immediate ancestor of the Riesling, its high quality and extreme scarcity assured its perennial position as Spain's (and one of Europe's) most expensive wine grapes. The high cost tempted many to stretch production through overproduction and blending resulting in frequent disappointment on the part of the adventurous taster. Authentic examples were produced in tiny, unstable lots which never made it outside the region. In 1988 the D.O. Rías Baixas was established as part of an ongoing movement to recuperate and assure authenticity. Refocusing attention on a superior microclimate and fuller style, Morgadío ("only son" in Gallego) set new standards upon its release.

In 1984 a farm named Morgadío in the Rías Baixas subdistrict of Condado do Tea near the aldea of Albeos was consolidated from multiple existing owners, and planting began. Vineyard area was gradually expanded to its current 148 acres. Within Rías Baixas there are three subdistricts: El Rosal and Val do Salnés on Galicia's rainy Atlantic coast, and Condado do Tea inland on the north bank of the Miño River, a situation remarkably reminiscent of Germany's Rheingau. Condado's benign climate, southern exposure and soil of brilliantly-reflective granite sand serve to maximize the Albariño's concentration.

As important as the great Albariño grape to the production of world-class white wine is adequate winemaking equipment. Just in time for the 1988 harvest, Morgadío finished a state-of-the-art gravity-flow facility at the bottom of the vineyard amphitheater which includes pneumatic presses and isothermic stainless steel tanks. From the 1996 vintage, the Méndez family of Orense has increased investment in the bodega for maximization of the estate's production, with a current capacity for annual production of 100% estate-bottled Albariño of 10,000 cases.

Legado del Conde Albariño (2013) - "Focused on fruity notes of apples and peaches and sweet honeycomb scents of wildflowers, this uses all its leesy richness to bring that sweet fruit in line. Chill it for pork roasted with peaches."

Morgadío Albariño (2012) - "Pale, green-tinged yellow. Zesty mineral-accented aromas of lemon/lime, underripe pear and flowers, with a hint of ginger in the background. Taut, linear and precise, offering surprisingly dense citrus and orchard fruit flavors and a touch of bitter quinine. Shows real power on the long, firm finish."

Broad and fleshy but energetic, offering ripe orchard fruit flavors and a bitter kick of lemon zest. Finishes with good grip and tangy persistence, leaving a musky pear skin note behind."

Morgadío Albariño (2012) - "This Spanish Albariño is impressive and very good. It is pale white gold colored and opens with fragrant ripe Bartlett pear with a hint of wet stone. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied, nicely balanced and savory. The flavor profile is a mild mineral infused Anjou pear with a hint of gentle lime. The finish is dry and flavors drift away nicely. This Albariño is extremely food friendly. I would pair it with pan-seared scallops with tomato ragout and caramelized shallots."

Legado del Conde Albariño (2012) - "Albariño, from the Rias Baixas region of Galicia in northwest Spain, essentially has two expressions: mineral and fruit. The Legado falls in the more traditional mineral style, with a focus on stony, saline flavors, hints of tree fruits and a squeeze of citrus. From Classical Wines, an importer to note for traditional-styled Spanish wines."

Morgadío Albariño (2011) - "...2011 Morgadío Albariño has a distinctive nose of dried pineapple and fresh pear that displays admirable intensity. The palate is fresh and crisp on the entry. There is a terse line of acidity and a lovely bitter lemon twist on the simple, but effective finish. Fine. Drink now-2018."

Morgadío Albariño (2009) - "Always among the top bottlings in each vintage from Rias Baixas, Morgadio is particularly appealing in 2009. It shows classic balance between ripe peach fruit in the midpalate and a zesty edge of citrus in the finish, and yet the wine is so integrated that the sensations seem continuous rather than set off against one another. Whereas a lot of bottlings from Rias Baixas are marred these days by diluted midpalates that leave them seeming unsatisfying, this wine delivers."

Morgadío Albariño (2008) - "This light yellow colored Albarino is always one of my favorite Spanish white wines each year. This vintage is no exception.
