PAZO DE ARRIBI / BODEGAS ADRIá

Region: Castilla y León
Appellation: D.O. El Bierzo
City: Villafranca del Bierzo

OVERVIEW

Bodegas Adriá was established in 2002 by a local winemaking family working in Bierzo since the 1930s for the specialized production of high quality wines. Working closely with the best sources in the Bierzo region growing old vine Mencía grapes, full-bodied and richly textured red wines expressing Bierzo’s mineral soils and fresh climate are obtained.

HISTORY

There is no region in Spain that more accurately expresses the Classical Wines philosophy of indigenous cool-climate viticulture than Bierzo. From the mid-1980s — prior to official D.O. status — we have consistently extolled and represented Bierzo’s (and Mencía’s) world-class potential and versatility.

Pazo de Arribi represents the desire to consistently offer excellent and typical Bierzo wines of easy accessibility, both stylistically and economically. To this end a collaboration has begun with a state-of-the-art facility using estate and purchased fruit from old vines in the heart of Bierzo Alto.

Pazo de Arribi Mencía comes from vineyards 30 years and older planted primarily in sandy and clay soils providing direct, ripe fruit character. The finished wine is aged three months in a mixture of second and third-year American and French oak barriques. Generous red-fruit and chocolate characteristics typical of Mencía are supported by accents of vanilla and toast from the oak.

Pazo de Arribi Godello is a bonus, and an excellent example of this ancient, noble and ascendant Spanish white variety. From wire-trained estate vineyards now over ten years old, Godello grapes are cold macerated and fermented in steel tanks, obtaining a wine with intense ripe pear and pineapple flavors and a subtle almond undertone.

Pazo de Arribi Godello (2010) - "Inviting texture mitigated by oak flavors and a touch of sweetness. "

Pazo de Arribi Godello (2010) - "Pale peach skin color. Poached pear and honey aromas are brightened by lemon zest and honeysuckle. Fleshy and smooth on entry, then tighter in the middle, offering lively orchard fruit flavors and a hint of candied ginger. Finishes on a slightly bitter note, with good tangy grip."

Pazo de Arribi Mencía (2009) - "Pazo de Arribi’s 2009 Mencía was aged in new French oak uprights for 3 months. Cedar, spice box, incense, and black raspberry aromas inform the nose of this round, friendly, easygoing red. This spicy effort will provide pleasure at a nice price over the next 3-4 years. "

Pazo de Arribi Mencía (2007) - "This soft, juicy, succulent rendering of the Mencia grape is wonderfully immediate in its appeal, and yet there is nothing obvious or grapey about it, and with nice spicy, smoky, savory accents, it can prove enduringly interesting for hours. Medium-bodied but full of flavor, this is a highly convincing wine at a surprisingly affordable price."

Pazo de Arribi Godello (2009) - "Bright gold. Pungent melon, pit fruit and fig aromas, with exotic floral and spice notes gaining strength with air. Dry, tightly wound nectarine and pear skin flavors become sweeter with air and pick up a gentle herbal note. Stains the palate on the finish, which leaves sappy honeydew and orchard fruit notes behind."

Pazo de Arribi Godello (2009) - "The 2009 Pazo de Arribi Godello reveals aromas of nutmeg, marzipan, apple, and pear. Crisp and dry on the palate with good depth, intense flavors, and a lengthy finish, it will deliver pleasant drinking for another 3-4 years."

Pazo de Arribi Mencía (2007) - "A muscular Bierzo, generous in black cherry aromas, this is impressively fresh and juicy. A year or two of age will lend it more complexity and tenderness."

Pazo de Arribi Mencía (2007) - "Ruby-red. Seductive aromas of red and dark berries, Asian spices, pepper and licorice, with a strong undercurrent of minerals. Light in body and sweet, offering spicy blackberry and cassis flavors and a refreshingly bitter note of candied licorice. Tightly wound and spicy on the finish, which repeats the blackberry note. There's a pinot-like delicacy to this wine that's pretty interesting. "

Pazo de Arribi Godello (2008) - "Very light gold. Pungent, herb-laced citrus and melon aromas are underscored by zesty mineral and jasmine nuances. Juicy and smooth, with good depth to the spicy lemon and orange flavors. Finishes with an echo of herbs and good grip. I like this wine's dry, focused character."

Pazo de Arribi Mencía (2006) - "Vivid red. Ripe cherry and plum on the nose, along with dark chocolate and anise qualities. Fleshy dark fruit flavors display greater ripeness than I usually encounter in this variety, which I associate with racy and sometimes even austere wines. Soft on the finish, with the plum note repeating. This could handle richer foods"
